Q:Are we allowed to celebrate "The new year" or is it a bid'ah (innovation)? And what is the ruling on congratulating one another?

Answered by: Sheikh Assim Alhakeem

A: It is not of the way of the Salaf to congratulate each other at the beginning of the new Hijri year. This was not done by the Prophet salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam nor his companions may Allah be pleased with them all.

Therefore, it is not permissible to initiate such a congratulation to others but if they greet us with it and congratulate us, we must respond in a nice way and congratulate them back.

As for celebrating the New Year with the disbelievers or congratulating them for it, this totally prohibited as this is part of their feasts.
